Dawson Schilz Ms. Lehmann English 2-1B 11 December 2019 “Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect” Evaluation
William James once said, “We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface but connected in the deep.” The idea of connection has interested many writers, including Frans de Waal. De Waal’s article “Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect” is an informational read because it talks about how primates build connections throughout life. The article “Monkey See, Monkey, Do, Monkey Connect” would be good for people who wantto learn about how connection shapes our lives. The author’s background makes him uniquely qualified to speak on the topic.
The author Frans de Waal has a biology degree and he is a director of the Living Links Center at Yerkes Primate Center in Atlanta, Georgia. De Waal also is a published author of books about primates. The purpose of the article “Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect” is to inform us about the connection of primates and humans. DeWaal is unbiased in his work. He is writing in a conservational style because he writes for the average reader. He is an engaging author, makes references to popular culture, and uses 1st person pronouns. De Waal didn’t post any references because he has the personal experiences necessary and he knows what he is talking about.
De Waal didn’t have any section titles in his article like I wish he did. I personally think that section titles make the article more organized. I don’t think that is good or bad, I just would like it better if he did have section titles. De Waal was always easing into the topic that he would next talk about. I think that easing into the next topic makes it more interesting and it hooks the readers in. De Waal moves nicely and smoothly from point to point or from topic to tophic. I think that the transitions are very effective, because it starts to tell you about the next paragraph, so that you will continue reading the article. All of his information is very relevant. I think that he was right about not using sources, even though if someone who didn’t know that he had a major in biology and worked with primates read this article, they might want a page of sources to know that his information wasn’t fake.
De Wall tied his information together well, and he introduced his main claim very well. He also made his conclusion restate the main claim, I think that was good of him to go back to his main claim in the end. The main claim is about how primates mimic other primates, and the author de Waal utilizes examples of monkey and human behavior to explain all of his claims. The author’s qualifications in primate behavior work for informing audiences, ```but there is no bibliography so his article wouldn’t be appropriate for in-depth learning or for a research paper.
The thing that made me like the article the most was how the author wrote in a conservational style. It was interesting that the author knew that much information about what he was talking about. I liked how De Waal mentioned his main claim repeatedly. I think the article is worth reading because it has interesting information.
